With the introduction of ethanol in today's gasoline, fuel injector "maintenance" is the best routine for peak engine performance and fuel efficiency. Off the car fuel injector cleaning is a must. “Out-of-the can” cleaning simply won’t cut it, doing more harm than good. It’s a temporary fix that actually can put sediment and dirt into the miniscule filter inside each fuel injector. You change your oil filter, did you ever think about the filter inside the injector? Benchmark test injectors
Before we can accurately compare before and after results we have to set a benchmark. All injectors are put on the test bench "as they come" to our shop. Injectors are tested for leakage at 80 psi. They are flowed both Static and Dynamically. All results are noted and will appear on your service report.
OHM test injectors for maximum electrical performance
One of the best ways to check for faulty injectors is to use a multi-tester, sometimes called a multi-meter. Testing continuity by using the OHM setting will tell you if the connection through injector is within normal limits or if it has opened and is no longer useable.
Remove internal filters, O-rings and pintle caps
External parts and filters tend to deteriorate with time and extreme operating conditions and stress from everyday use. Never reuse these parts.
Clean external injector body ultrasonically
Ultrasonic cleaning uses cavitation bubbles induced by high-frequency pressure (sound) waves to agitate a liquid. The agitation produces high forces on contaminants adhering to substrates like metals, plastics and ceramics. This action also penetrates blind holes, cracks, and recesses. The intention is to thoroughly remove all traces of contamination tightly adhering or embedded onto solid surfaces. Our equipment uses ultrasound (usually from 20–400 kHz) and the appropriate cleaning solvent.
Clean fuel injector internally with ultrasonic technology
The same technology used in our external cleaning process is used to internally clean the injector with the exception of the injector is being pulsed as it sits in the heated ultrasonic bath at varying levels from 1/3 This process dislodges any remaining contaminates from the internal injector parts.
Flow test to verify proper atomization and injector flow characteristics
The injectors are placed back on the test bench and checked for proper flow rate, spray pattern and leak down. The injectors are first run static to measure size and comparable flow. They are then flowed dynamically on one of our computer controlled test benches. Dynamic flow testing fires the injectors in sequence between 600 rpm's and 10,000rpm's with each rpm range cycling from 3mS to 12mS pulse widths. This test simulates all throttle positions and driving conditions. If at this time the injectors are not up to spec, the cleaning process will be repeated.
Use the best fuel injector calibration fluid
We use only the best calibration fluid in all our test equipment. To be accurate a fluid as close to gasoline (without using gasoline) is used. Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance compared to the density (mass of the same unit volume) of a reference substance. Apparent specific gravity is the ratio of the weight of a volume of the substance to the weight of an equal volume of the reference substance. In our case, the reference substance is gasoline. This along with the right temperature is the difference of a good tune or a great one. All tests run with SouthBay's Calibration Fluid @ 20oC (±1oC), 3.0 Bar (±.01 Bar), 13.8 (±.05VDC), saturated driver with RC cutoff. Injector flow rates are based on testing with SouthBay's Calibration Fluid (0.745 g/ml) compared to U.S. EPA emission test gasoline 40CFR86.113 (0.735g/ml).
We replace all parts removed prior to the external cleaning process with new OEM parts fitted to your particular injector. Proper filter baskets, orings, spacers and seals are installed using the highest quality parts available. Older style injectors with a metal body receive a coat of high temp ceramic to hold down rust and prolong the life of the injector.
